The Evolutionary Medicine & Anatomy Group focuses on the relationship between evolution and health problems, with an special focus on the macro-evolutionary patterns of cranial anatomy, the interplay between pathology and morphological evolution, and the genomic causes of congenital malformations and other diseases. We use principles of evolutionary biology to better understand, prevent, and treat anatomical pathologies and birth defects, and study diseases to advance basic knowledge in evolutionary biology.
The group is based at the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences of the Pompeu Fabra University (DCEXS-UPF) within the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park. The DCEXS-UPF is a “Maria de Maeztu” Excellence Unit by the Spanish Government. We are funded by a grant from “la Caixa” Banking Foundation.
